How to get around Paros

Paros is a fairly small island so it’s easy to visit the main sites in a few days. You can explore the island by local bus, taxis, and rental cars. I hired a car when I arrived on the island with Auto Union, however I recommend reserving one in advance if you know your travel dates and/or are travelling during high season. This will also help you to get the best deal. A car will give you a lot more flexibility to explore the island, as well as save you time, but it will set you back around €40-60 a day.

For those opting for public transport, a smart tip is to secure your bus tickets in advance. You can conveniently purchase these at bus terminals in Parikia and Naoussa, or even at select mini-marts. This will save you both time and money, although tickets can also be bought on the bus from the driver for an additional fee. Depending on your destination, tickets range from €1.80 to €4.00.

1) Discover the cute villages – Best things to do in Paros

1) Parikia

As the main port and capital of Paros, Parikia is the gateway to the island’s delights. Explore the charming narrow streets adorned with bougainvillea, white-washed buildings, and traditional tavernas serving tasty Greek cuisine. Don’t miss the historic Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a Byzantine church dating back to the 4th century and one of the most significant religious sites in the region. Make sure to also immerse yourself in the vibrant Local Markets, offering a variety of handicrafts, souvenirs, and fresh produce. I bought myself a beautiful ring for just €10!

2) Naoussa

Naoussa is a charming fishing village with a vibrant atmosphere and a picturesque harbour, it is also where I decided to base myself during my stay in Paros. Stroll through its cobbled alleys and watch the sunset from one of its many waterfront restaurants, additionally make sure to walk to the Venetian Castle for panoramic views of the village and surrounding landscapes.

I stayed at Mr & Mrs White, which is just a 10 minute walk from Naousa centre. Their rooms are very light and spacious, with a modern bohemian design, furthermore they have two pools which is great for windy days plus free parking.

3) Lefkes

Escape the coastal crowds and venture to Lefkes, a traditional mountain village that offers a serene and authentic Greek experience. Surrounded by lush greenery, Lefkes boasts captivating views of the island’s landscape. Visit the Byzantine church of Agia Triada, then explore the picturesque streets lined with artisan shops and tavernas. Lefkes is also where you’ll find the instagrammable photo spot of the bougainvillea corner house.

4) Marpissa

Marpissa is a quaint and picturesque village located in the eastern part of Paros. It exudes a traditional Cycladic ambiance, and is a real hidden gem. It was my personal favourite village, and definitely one of the best things to do in Paros.

Marpissa is known for its well-preserved architecture, with narrow winding streets, whitewashed buildings, and colorful doors and shutters, therefore it’s a must visit place for photo lovers! From the Panagia Ekatontapiliani church to cute tavernas and the house with the pink door. Make sure to stop for lunch at Charoula’s tavern and enjoy some typical Parian cuisine.

5) Prodromos

Prodromos is a small village located in the heart of Paros, nestled between the towns of Marpissa and Lefkes. Despite its size, it offers a glimpse into rural Greek life. Prodromos provides an authentic village experience, away from the bustling tourist areas. Its tranquility and simplicity make it a charming spot to explore.

The village is home to a small Folklore Museum, showcasing artifacts and items that reflect the traditional way of life on the island. It’s an opportunity to learn about the island’s history and culture.

2) Kolymbithres Beach

Kolymbithres is one of the best beaches in Paros. It has huge granite rocks, sculpted by nature, forming unique coves and pools. These natural formations create small, secluded beaches where you can enjoy some privacy and tranquility. Rent a sunbed, or lounge on the rocks!

If you’re looking for some adventure you’ll find two water sports centres on the beach, offering a variety of activities including windsurfing, mini sailboats, kayaks, and SUPs.

If you are looking to escape the crowds in Paros, make sure to check out Glifades Beach.

3) Take a day trip to Anti Paros

If you’re spending a few days in Paros, make sure to take a day trip to Anti Paros. It’s just a short ferry ride away from Pounta or Parikia. This small gem is famous for its laid-back ambiance and pristine beaches. Explore the enchanting Antiparos Cave, walk around the streets of Antiparos town and check out the many secluded beaches. I really loved Fanari and Sostis Beach.

A great way to explore the islands coastline is to join a boat tour or rent your own private boat.

4) Marvel at the Archaeological Wonders

If you are a history buff, one of the best things to do in Paros is enjoy the treasure trove of ancient sites. Take a trip to the Archaeological Museum of Paros in Parikia, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts dating back to the Bronze Age.

Be sure to also visit the ancient marble quarries in Marathi, where you can witness the iconic Parian marble used in renowned sculptures like the Venus de Milo.

If you’re an adventure lover you might want to join a sea kayak tour. This is a great way to explore rocky coastlines, remote beaches and crystal clear waters

If you’re seeking a more immersive experience, don your snorkel and explore the vibrant marine life beneath the surface, or take the plunge with scuba diving to discover hidden underwater treasures. You can do this at a number of different beaches, alternatively you can join a snorkelling boat tour if you don’t have your own gear.

You’ll find the majority of restaurants in Naoussa and Parikia. I recommend checking out:

1) Siparos (outside Naousa)

A culinary gem just outside of Naousa, Siparos offers a blend of traditional Greek and modern cuisine, with the most incredible seaside location. Thanks to its stylish ambiance and an extensive wine list, it’s an ideal spot for a romantic dinner.

It offers small plates from €4-10 so you can easily try lots of different dishes. Located on the waterfront, Koutouki has a peaceful atmosphere different from the offer waterfront eateries typically crowded with tourists.

The park is open from June to September, from 09:30 to 19:30, and is just €3.50 for adults.
