Most Instagrammable Photo Spots in Lanzarote

You will find some of the most unique landscapes of the Canary Islands on Lanzarote. Known as the island of a 1000 volcanos, Lanzarote has year-round warm weather, beaches and an incredible volcanic landscape. It is a haven for photographers as there are so many unusual places to discover and capture. In this article I will share the most instagrammable photo spots in Lanzarote as well as tips on the best time to go. Although the island is small and easy to navigate I have divided the list into north and south to make it more straightforward for you to plan your trip. You can also watch my Lanzarote Instagram story highlight to see my full trip.

Where to stay in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a fairly small island, it only takes an hour and a half to drive from top to bottom, so you can easily stay in one place and explore from there. I stayed for a week in the bigger coastal town of Puerto del Carmen at the Apartamentos Elena, which I would definitely recommend.

1) Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park is the most popular thing to do in Lanzarote and for good reason! The landscape of Timanfaya National Park was created by volcanic eruptions in the 1730s, here you will discover hundreds of craters and unusual land formations coloured with red, orange and yellow. For safety reasons you cannot walk around the national park, and you will need to pay €12 per person for a bus tour (making it hard to take photos). However you can take some cool photos from near the restaurant (where you will park your car), and the most instagrammable photo spot in Lanzarote is on the LZ-67 road that runs next to the park. Just be careful walking on the road.

Timanfaya National Park is located inland and isn’t near any towns so you will either need a car to get here or you can book a tour!

2) La Geria Vineyards

Another incredibly unusual landscape in Lanzarote are the vineyards of La Geria. The bright green vines coupled with the black volcanic soil will make you feel like you’re on another planet and makes it a very instaworthy photo spot.

Make sure to stop at the Bodega La Geria for some wine tasting, their speciality is white wine and they have a load of different bottles to try! Again you will need a car to get here, or you can book a tour.

3) Caldera de los Cuervos

One of the easiest volcanic craters to visit in Lanzarote is the Caldera de los Cuervos. There is a loop trail you can follow in a barren, rock-strewn landscape. I recommend coming at sunset for the best light for photos.

4) Volcan Colibri

One of the best spots to catch the sunset, as well as one of the most instagrammable photo spots in Lanzarote is the Volcan Colibri. You will need to hike for about 30 minutes to get to the top of this old volcano, and I recommend wearing closed shoes as the path is just small volcanic rocks! At the top of Volcan Colibri you will be greeted with beautiful views of Timanfaya National Park and the Caldera de los Cuervos.

5) Playa de Papagayo

One of my favourite beaches in the Canary Islands is found on Lanzarote. The Playa de Papagayo is a beautiful white sand beach with turquoise water and bordered by black volcanic stone. The cliffs of this cove shaped beach protect it from waves making it the ideal spot to snorkel and swim.

I recommend coming midweek and before 10am if you want to take some pictures of a mostly empty beach. You will need a car to get here, as well as to pay a €2 entrance fee in cash per car.

6) Charco Verde

Another must visit beach in Lanzarote is the Charco Verde, just next to the town of El Golfo to the west of the island. Charco Verde is a black sand beach with red cliffs and a green lagoon. The contrast in colours makes for a very unique instagrammable photo spot.

7) Charcones – Natural Rock Pools

If you love to discover places off the beaten path that most tourists don’t visit then you will want to check out the Charcones, a collection of natural rock pools to the west of Lanzarote. The area stretches along 2km of coastline so there are plenty of different rock pools to discover. However they aren’t the easiest to find so make sure to read this guide.

If you want to safely enjoy a swim in the rock pools make sure to check the tides before going and aim for low tide. Even at low tide please be careful of waves crashing over from the sea.

8) Museo Atlantico Lanzarote

A really unique instagrammable photo post in Lanzarote is the Museo Atlantico, Europe’s only underwater museum. The Museo Atlantico de Lanzarote is a collection ofΒ over 300 impressive sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor. It is accessible to divers and snorkelers, just make sure to bring your underwater camer!

9) Stratified City

Just off the side of the road near the town of Teseguite in Lanzarote is a curious volcanic landform. It’s scattered with these stratified mounds of ash which over time have eroded into unique shapes. Unfortunately a lot of them have been graffitied on but it still makes for an interesting place to discover and photograph.

10) Montana Cabrera

Another instagrammable photo spot in Lanzarote that is off the beaten path are the incredible natural caves in Montana Cabrera. You will need to hike up the mountain (make sure to wear trainers), and there are a few different collapsed holes to discover, including one cave with smooth orange rock and a natural sky window which I couldn’t resist taking a photo of (please note that the light rays are fake).

11) Mirador de El Risco de Famara

One of the best spots to watch the sunset in Lanzarote is from the Mirador de El Risco de Famara. Here you will have views over a long stretching coastline, as well as rolling mountains. There is even a rock chair that you can sit on which makes the most perfect instagrammable photo spot. Make sure to take the natural stairs down from there to discover a beautiful cave too!

You will need a car to get here, you can either park on the main road below and walk up, or take the dirt road to the parking above. Personally we drove up but it’s not the easiest of roads.

12) Caleta de Famara

Just underneath the Mirador de El Risco de Famara is the Playa de Famara, a beautiful long beach framed by incredible mountains. It is a popular surfing spot and a great spot for photographers too! Make sure to come when the tide is going out to admire the reflection of the cliffs on the wet sand.

13) La Graciosa

If you come to Lanzarote then you have to take at least a day trip to the nearby island of La Graciosa. Here you’ll be able to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy secluded golden beaches with turquoise water.

There are no road on La Graciosa so the best way to get around is by bike. You can hire these when you arrive off the boat at Caleta del Sebo for €10 a day. It isn’t the easiest place to cycle though so you might want to opt for an electric bike for €30. It will take you around 30 minutes to an hour one way to cycle to the Playa de las Conchas or around 15 minutes one way to cycle to Playa Francesa. If you plan on staying the night make sure to book this in advance as there is limited availability.

You can get to La Graciosa via ferry from Orzola, you can either buy these on arrival or secure your place by booking online.

Another must visit viewpoint in Lanzarote is the Mirador del Rio. It has an incredible view of Lanzarote’s coastline and La Graciosa. A Perfect photo spot!

15) Teguise

The cutest town in Lanzarote is definitely the small inland town of Teguise. Dating from the 13th century, it is one of the oldest towns in the Canary Islands. Thanks to recent restoration projects Teguise is now considered an Architectural Historic Site. It is a very quiet town with cute white houses. The perfect place to stop for lunch and have a little walk around the photogenic streets.
