Here are the best things to do in Stowe Vermont in the Fall. I have divided it into a perfect 3-day itinerary, so you can make the most of your autumn in Stowe. However it is possible to squeeze it into a 2 night trip too.

Visiting Stowe in Fall – When Do the Leaves Change in Vermont?

The fall foliage in Vermont typically reaches its peak from late September to mid-October. It will depend on the weather conditions throughout the year. The colours can range from vibrant reds and oranges to golden yellows, painting the landscape with a stunning natural tapestry. If you want to experience the fall foliage at its most vibrant, aim to visit Stowe between the first and second week of October. I visited 4-6 October 2023 which was peak.

Morning: 1) Explore Stowe Village

Start your day with a leisurely stroll through Stowe Village. Wander through the charming streets, where you’ll find unique boutiques, art galleries, and cozy cafes. Make sure to stop and take a photo of the STOWE sign. You’ll find it on the side of the Lake Champlain Chocolates shop.

You also have to stop by the Stowe Community Church. An iconic white-steepled building that’s picture-perfect against the backdrop of autumn leaves. Head to Stowe Community Church Viewpoint for the best view of the church.

Afternoon: 2) Get lost in the Percy Farm Corn Maze

No fall trip to Stowe is complete without a visit to the Percy Farm Corn Maze. Located just a short drive from Stowe Village, this family-owned farm offers a quintessential autumn experience that’s perfect for all ages. The maze is expertly crafted each year, winding through tall corn stalks with challenging twists and turns that make for a fun and engaging adventure.

In addition to the maze, Percy Farm offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, which are especially breathtaking during peak foliage.

It costs only $8 to do, and you can pay by cash or venmo.

Evening: 3) Sunset at Trapp Family Lodge

End your day with a visit to the Trapp Family Lodge. A beautiful alpine lodge with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and fall foliage. You might recognise the name as it’s owned by the family that inspired The Sound of Music! Here you can enjoy a hearty meal at their on-site restaurant. You can savour Austrian-inspired dishes made with local ingredients. After dinner, take a peaceful walk around the property whilst the sun sets, casting a warm glow over the autumn landscape.

The Trapp Family Lodge isn’t just a picturesque spot; it’s also one of the best places to stay in Stowe. They offer European-style accommodations with a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern luxury. As well as lots of breathtaking fall foliage on the grounds. Due to its popularity, especially during peak fall season, it’s essential to book your stay well in advance.

On the drive to the lodge make sure to stop at one of the best fall photo spots in Stowe, a beautiful red barn surrounded by fall foliage. It’s located on Luce Hill Road, just before it splits into Bouchard road.

Morning: 4) Visit Smugglers’ Notch

If you all looking for the best place in Stowe to see the fall foliage, then drive over to Smugglers’ Notch. This narrow pass through the Green Mountains is rich in orange and gold in autumn. The Notch Road (Route 108) is closed in the winter, but during the fall, it provides one of the most picturesque drives in Vermont. Take your time winding through the cliffs and foliage-covered hills. Make sure to stop at various viewpoints to capture the beauty of the season.

Afternoon: 5) Gondola Ride at Stowe Mountain Resort

One of the best things to do in Stowe is to take the Gondola SkyRide from Stowe Mountain Resort to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. The gondola offers a bird’s-eye view of the vibrant fall colors, and once at the top, you can explore the scenic ridgeline or simply relax and take in the panoramic views. However it does cost $40 return and only takes 10 minutes to go up.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try the resort’s zip-lining experience for a thrilling way to see the foliage.

Evening: 7) Best places to eat in Stowe

For dinner, make a reservation at one of the local restaurants. Such as The Bench or Plate, both known for their farm-to-table cuisine. I also really liked the vibes and food at Idletyme, a brewery and restaurant. If you are into beer then you might want to book a half day brewery tour.

6) Stowe Recreation Path

Start your last day in Stowe with a leisurely walk or bike ride along the Stowe Recreation Path. This 5.3-mile paved trail meanders through meadows, woodlands, and past the West Branch River, offering incredible views of the Vermont fall foliage. The path is relatively flat, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels. Be sure to bring your camera, as you’ll encounter several picture-perfect spots along the way.

7) Cold Hollow Cider Mill

A visit to Stowe in the fall wouldn’t be complete without stopping by Cold Hollow Cider Mill, one of Vermont’s most beloved attractions, and just a 10 minute drive from Stowe. This historic cider mill is famous for its fresh-pressed apple cider, made right on-site using traditional rack and cloth presses.

The mill’s cozy atmosphere is filled with the sweet aroma of apples and cinnamon, especially during the fall when the cider-making process is in full swing. In addition to sampling the cider, visitors can enjoy the mill’s legendary cider donuts—warm, crispy, and perfectly spiced—making them a must-try treat. Afterward, indulge in a scoop (or two) of your favourite flavour at the Scoop Shop, where you can try exclusive, limited-edition varieties you won’t find anywhere else. Don’t forget to visit the Flavour Graveyard, a quirky tribute to retired ice cream flavours.. 9) Watch the sunset at Nichols Ledge

Nichols Ledge is a must-visit destination in Vermont, especially during the fall foliage season. Located about a 50 minute drive from Stowe, this hidden gem offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the area. It has panoramic vistas of vibrant autumn colours stretching across the Vermont landscape.

The hike to Nichols Ledge is relatively short, just 10 minutes from the car park. So it accessible for most skill levels, and the payoff at the summit is incredible. As you stand on the edge of the ledge, you’ll be greeted by a sweeping view of Lake Elmore below, framed by a tapestry of red, orange, and yellow leaves. Nichols ledge is one of the top things to do in Stowe, however please note that the area is closed from 1st march – 1st august as there are baby hawks nesting.
