Chefchaouen, often referred to as the Blue Pearl of Morocco, is a mesmerizing city known for its blue-washed streets and stunning mountain backdrop. Whether you’re spending just one day or two days in Chefchaouen, this itinerary will guide you through the best things to do in Chefchaouen. Including the best places to visit, where to stay, how to get there and how to make the most of your time in this charming town.
Make sure to save my map of all the best places in Chefchaouen, so that you can save time and easily find them.
If you’re hoping to snap lots of photos of this beautiful blue town, then check out my guide to the most instagrammable places in Chefchaouen!
The best thing to do in Chefchaouen is to stroll through the blue streets in the medina. Here you can immerse yourself in the blue-washed walls, vibrant doors, and picturesque alleyways. There are many little narrow winding streets so it can be easy to get lost, but I think this is all part of the fun!
If you want to learn more about the history of this town, as well as discover the most beautiful spots, I recommend booking a city tour which starts from only £30 per person.
The medina is where you’ll find all the best photo spots in Chefchaouen. I’ve saved my favourite places, restaurants with a view and instagram spots in Chefchaouen on a Google Map so you can easily find them!
Make sure to check out the cutest street in Chefchaouen; Derb Kadi Ben Maimoun (go before 9am or you’ll have to pay), the House of Mosaics, the White Mosque, Said’s Orange Juice Shop, Sidi Bouchouka photo spot (where you’ll find the prettiest door in Chefchaouen) and the Lonely Planet cover picture location.
If you’re into photography then have a look at my guide to the best photo spots in Chefchaouen.
If you want to easily find the best spots and take some nice photos, then you might want to book a photography tour from around £45 per person.
Head to the central square, Plaza Uta el-Hammam, and visit the Kasbah Museum. A restored 15th-century fortress that offers a glimpse into Chefchaouen’s history and culture through its beautiful gardens and small ethnographic museum.
This important historical monument, used over the centuries as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and a prison, now houses the ethnological museum, an interior garden, fountains, and patios. Climb the tower for spectacular panoramic views of the medina and surrounding mountains, making it a must-see attraction in Chefchaouen.
Between exploring the blue streets of the medina and visiting the Kasbah Museum, be sure to enjoy lunch on a rooftop terrace. Chefchaouen is beautiful from below, but it’s otherworldly from above!
Restaurant Hamsa, located near the Kasbah, offers incredible views and a menu featuring local dishes. This spot is perfect for both vegans and those who need gluten-free options, ensuring everyone can enjoy a delicious meal with a stunning backdrop.
For a more international menu and equally gorgeous views, head to Café Clock. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse menu, Café Clock provides a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan cuisine and global favorites, making it a must-visit for a memorable rooftop dining experience in Chefchaouen.
End your day with a short hike to the Spanish Mosque, located on a hill overlooking Chefchaouen. The 20-minute walk is highly rewarding, as the mosque offers the prime spot for watching the sunset, making it one of the top things to do in Chefchaouen. As the sun sets, watch the blue hues of the city transform into a magical twilight.
You’ll find it on Google Maps as Bouzafer Mosque. Make sure to head up at least 30 minutes before sunset as the sun will disappear behind the mountain before the official sunset time.
As Chefchaouen is quite small it’s easy to do the main things in one day. However if you have more time this will definitely make your stay more relaxed and allow you time to discover the extremities of Chefchaouen too. Or you can spend some time shopping for souvenirs in the medina. Look for handwoven textiles, traditional Moroccan lamps, and locally made crafts.
Start your second day with a trip to the Akchour Waterfalls, located about 30 kilometers from Chefchaouen. You can hire a taxi or join a guided tour to get there. The hike to the waterfalls is moderate, taking about 2-3 hours round trip. Enjoy the lush scenery and cool off in the refreshing pools.
Return to Chefchaouen to either explore the medina some more, or to relax in your luxury boutique hotel. I stayed at Dar Jasmine which has the most Incredible view. Definitely the best place to stay in Chefchaouen!
You will have to walk up lots of steps to get here but it is 1000% worth it. Plus they have lovely staff to help you with your bags. They have a pool overlooking the blue city so you can sunbath and relax. Before having a traditional meal in their restaurant. Which, I’m sure you’ve guessed, also has an incredible view of Chefchaouen! Plus rooms with breakfast start from only £130 a night. I also paid an extra 500 MAD (around £40) for a 1 hour massage in my room! It’s also only a 10 minute walk away from the medina.
Take some more time to relax by enjoying a traditional Moroccan hammam experience at Hammam Al Kasaba. This spa offers a range of treatments that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.
If you’re wondering where to stay in Chefchaouen, I recommend:
The most convenient way to reach Chefchaouen is by bus or taxi from major cities like Tangier, Tetouan, or Fez.
The journey from Tangier takes about two hours by car or three hours by bus. I personally used the indrive app (kind of like Uber but you have to pay in cash). Here I was able to find a good deal from Tangier for 500 MAD, around £40 (Usually it should be around 700-800 MAD). Then I took the CTM bus back to Tangier for 70 MAD (around £5), plus a 5 MAD cash fee for my suitcase. This is a modern bus with air conditioning so it’s very comfortable. Just make sure to book your ticket online at least one day in advance.
If you plan on coming just for a day from Tangier then you might want to book a day trip transfer. You can also do a day trip from Fez. However it will take around 4 hours one way from Fez, giving you hardly any time in Chefchaouen.
Whether you have just one or a full two days in Chefchaouen, this itinerary ensures you experience the best things to do in Chefchaouen. From exploring the medina and visiting historic sites to hiking in nature and indulging in local cuisine. It’s such a unique and beautiful place, definitely worth visiting for at least a day during your Morocco trip.
