4 of the Best Places in South America for Adventurous Holidays

If you’re looking for your next adventure holiday, you’ve come to the right place! South
America is bursting with extraordinary natural landscapes; from volcanoes and rivers to forests and jungles. Here are four of the best places for an adventure holiday in this striking and diverse continent.

1) Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Home to the iconic Incan citadel that nestles in the nook of the Andes Mountains, Peru is rich in both history and outstanding natural beauty. Walk in the footsteps of an ancient civilisation and follow the winding trail from the Urubamba River, through cloud forests and mountainous terrain, passing crumbling fortresses along the way before reaching the lost city of Machu Picchu. The scenery along this 27 mile trail is absolutely breathtaking, and whichever route you opt for will culminate with the mesmerising spectacle of the cloud-covered peaks of the Andes.

2) Witness the eclipse in Chile

In Chile, expect to find nature on a colossal scale. The landscape of this mountainous world is striking with its vast lakes, Incaic architecture and iconic Valle de la Luna. But there is something quite remarkable that tops it all – the extraordinary phenomenon of the total solar eclipse.

On the 2nd of July 2019, a total solar eclipse will plunge a narrow strip of South America into momentary twilight. This phenomenon will be visible from the Elqui region of northern Chile, which is also renowned for stargazing due to its altitude and clear night skies. A total solar eclipse only happens every one to two years, so getting to experience it among such spectacular surroundings is an opportunity too good to miss.

3) Climb volcanoes in Ecuador

Although perhaps most commonly known for the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador has much
more to offer the adventurous traveller. Not only do the magnificent Andes cross the country from top to bottom, but you can also discover the fearsome β€œAvenue of the Volcanoes” with its soaring peaks.

As luck would have it, these volcanoes can be climbed all year round and there’s a great
selection to choose from – El Altar, Cayambe and Cotopaxi are the most popular climbs. So, if you’re an avid mountain climber, prepare yourself for some awe-inspiring views. What’s more, if you’re here to tick off another bucket list experience, you have the option to climb Chimborazo – not only the highest point in Ecuador, but the furthest point from the centre of the Earth, too!

4) White water raft in Argentina

Whether you’re a keen rafter, or it’s your first time, Argentina is the place to experience some of the world’s best white water rafting. This wild adventure isn’t limited to the warmer months either – you can try your hand at this sport all year round. A spectacular fact about the rivers flowing through Argentina is that most of them are the result of meltwater from the Andes travelling down to the sea and lakes. The Argentine rivers best known for white water rafting include Alumine, Atuel, Corcovado and Juramento.
